In this course, you will explore best practices in student-centered teaching and learning.  You will evaluate the impact of this approach on student success and retention.  As well, you will examine the methodologies used in Ontario to reliable evaluate student demonstration of performance-based outcomes.  The course focuses on the wide variety of resources available to support educators in designing active learning experiences that engage learners. As well, you will explore the importance of self-direction, confidence, and motivation in terms of student success and retention.  The course introduces best practices in enhancing student connectedness to their learning through integrated learning opportunities.

In this course, you will examine the paradigm shift in the education sector globally and the new competencies for effective teaching.  You will explore the Canadian education system that encompasses both publicly funded and private schools at a variety of levels.  As education in Canada is a provincial responsibility, there are significant differences between the education systems of the different provinces. The course focuses on the structure, regulatory and curriculum frameworks of the Ontario Ministry of Education. As well, you will explore the variety of supports, services and initiatives designed to foster student success and support retention.

Technology use in the classroom involves the integration of skills and strategies to effectively engage all learners. In this course, you will analyze accessible educational technologies for practical applications in a variety of learning contexts. You will also evaluate specific technological tools used in classrooms in Canada and their pedagogical applications. This course will provide opportunities for the creation of novel online and mobile interactive activities and lesson materials for potential use in your own classrooms.  Presentations and interculturally-focused discussions will further allow for the synthesis of application and reflection on the skills and strategies required in the classroom when using educational technologies.
